Restaurant location guide
How to evaluate a restaurant location
Restaurant demand changes by meal period and format. A busy district can still be wrong if the unit is hidden, the permitted use is unsuitable or delivery access conflicts with service.

The questions that decide the location
Start with decision questions, then collect only the evidence that can answer them.
- Which demand groups are present at breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekends?
- Do comparable restaurants prove demand, or crowd the same price and cuisine segment?
- Can the unit support permitted use, exhaust, grease management, deliveries and fire requirements?
Case frame: People's Square, Shanghai
People's Square combines metro interchange, offices, retail, cultural venues and visitor demand. A credible review must split these mapped proxies by meal period and then inspect the exact unit. Area popularity alone does not establish restaurant suitability.
Compare street-level access with underground mall and upper-floor units.
Separate office lunch demand from evening and weekend demand.
Treat exhaust, permitted use and total occupancy cost as lease gates.
A repeatable evaluation method
Each stage produces evidence or a clear request for missing information.
Specify cuisine, format and price
A quick-service lunch concept and a destination dinner restaurant need different catchments and frontage.
Build meal-period demand hypotheses
Use offices, homes, schools, hotels, retail and entertainment as proxies, then verify actual flows at the intended service times.
Map comparable supply
Count and classify nearby restaurants by cuisine, price, format and route position. Raw category totals are not enough.
Clear the premises gates
Confirm licensing, exhaust, drainage, power, fire safety, delivery access, opening hours and full lease cost.
Data sources and their limits
Every source is used for a specific claim. No source is treated as complete by default.

These inputs are premises-specific and cannot be reliably inferred from public map data.Questions people ask before choosing a site
Does a high POI count mean the site will be profitable?
No. POIs are demand and competition proxies. Revenue still depends on rent, frontage, product, price, operations and observed footfall.
Why use a walking catchment instead of a circle?
A street network reflects crossings, barriers and actual paths. A simple radius treats blocked and accessible places as equally close.
Can map data tell me whether a restaurant unit has an exhaust duct?
No. Exhaust, drainage, power capacity and permitted use are premises facts. They must be confirmed with the landlord, authorities and an on-site inspection.
